Amazon.com Inc. has become the first company to win the 2017 Amazon Smile charity initiative.
The award was announced Monday by the organization.
The Amazon Smile Foundation was created in 2018 to promote and support non-profit charities that provide lifesaving assistance and other goods and services to children.
It includes Amazon, Walmart and Best Buy.
The new Amazon Smile Award, named for its founder, will be presented at a panel on Aug. 3 at the International Toy Fair in San Francisco.
Amazon also will participate in the program in 2019, the company said in a statement.
The organization has a $1 billion endowment and aims to raise at least $3.5 billion in grants, loans and donations to help charities in underserved areas.
Last year, Amazon made a $5.4 billion donation to the Children’s Defense Fund, the organization that provides supplies to children in developing countries.
“The Amazon Smile Fund is dedicated to giving millions of kids in developing nations a better life,” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in the statement.
“Through the Amazon Foundation, we will continue to do more for children in need and help make a difference in their lives.”

The foundation will provide support to charities in the areas of disaster relief, education and health.
Amazon and Best Buys first partnership, which began in 2015, has helped provide $6 billion to the foundation, which includes more than 1,600 programs in more than 30 countries.
The program is expected to expand over time.
The charity’s mission is to raise awareness, build partnerships and develop philanthropic strategies.
“We are incredibly grateful for the Amazon gift of the Amazon Gift Card, the Amazon Prime Card and the Amazon Video Credit Card,” CEO Mike Novogratz said in an email to staff.
“It will help us continue to provide a range of charitable programs to millions of children and their families around the world and support the work of charities that work tirelessly to help vulnerable children.”
